Spiritual Development Through Volunteerism

Paper presented in International Symposium on Volunteerism as Catalyst for Nation Building, 27th – 30th November 2011, Dewan Kampo, International Youth Center, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, organized by International Youth Center , Ministry of Youth and Sports Malaysia and, Universiti Putra Malaysia with the cooperation of World Assembly of Youth, World Youth Foundation, Committee for ASEAN Youth Cooperation and Malaysian Youth Council.


DEFINITION
•Volunteering comes from the word voluntary.
•People who work voluntarily in any capacity and social development services is called a volunteer.
•Volunteering involves work or action with sincerity and without being directed or instructed.

Volunteering means action
•Facts on Volunteerism
•Volunteer work usually done in the form of a group or organization.
•Volunteering as a group and organization is more effective because of the concept of:
•i. mutual assistance,
•ii. cooperation in groups (esprit de corps) and
•iii. mutual understanding.

Volunteerism in the context of Islam
•The attitude and spirit of volunteerism, mutual help and cooperation is holy in the sight of Allah provided it is accompanied with sincerity of heart and true intention of heart.

Key elements of volunteerism
•1. Sacrifice of time, energy and feelings
• 2. Sacrifice of comfort
• 3. Provide transformation and benefits to individuals, community or religion.
• 4. Volunteer, be happy and honest.
• 5. No personal interest
•6. No material goals.
•7. Best practices.

Volunteerism Needs Strength and Power!!

Why Becoming Volunteer?
•Religious reasons.
•Altruistic reasons.
•Social needs.
•To gain experience or remuneration for personal use.
•There are those who want them to be useful to society.
•Volunteerism and Expectation

Volunteer work does not expect any:
i.remuneration,
ii.reward,
iii.praise or
iv.profit except for the pleasure of Allah.

Leadership and Volunteerism
•Training and Encouragement: to enhance their leadership skills, intelligence, physical and mental resilience.
•Motivation and Encouragement: to carry out charity work from time to time.
•Personal character: to believe strongly in religion, discipline and responsibility. Willingness and sincerity of heart above all else.

Always Ready
•The volunteers must stand ready at any time and place to provide the best service and quality to those in need.
•They also must have a high sense of responsibility and trust.
•Serve either in charity work and humanitarian assistance at any time and any place.

Qualities of Volunteers
•Volunteers must demonstrate moral excellence, positive social behavior, competent and high personality.
•Volunteers must demonstrate exemplary character (mahmudah) and avoid the wrong things and morals (mazmumah)as well as temperament.
•Demonstrate also personality of civilized manners in accordance with religious teachings.
•Volunteers must constantly strive to improve themselves either in:
•i. academic excellence
•ii. integrity,
•iii. emotional and mental, physical and spiritual advancement
•iv. practice and inculcate good values
•v. positive, proactive, self motivated, and self-reliance.
•vi.tolerance, patience and diligence
vii. high morale
viii.not easily give up
ix.not leave it to fate alone.
x.always firmly dealing with any challenges in this era of globalization.

Qualities of Volunteers
•The qualities of volunteers are those who have:
•i. the willingness to sacrifice time, feelings, energy, and comfort.
•ii. always establish good and harmonious relations, cooperation and understanding between each other
•iii. should also be involved in community work and social development.
•iv. In short, they are people who are willing to help anyone in need.

Spiritual Advancement

Conclusion
•People who joins the volunteer team or individual involved in voluntary activities has its own uniqueness.
•It adopts the attitude and spirit of learning and self satisfaction.
•It can nurture the spirit and attitude of cooperation, mutual assistance and cooperation.

Assalamualaikum Dr, saya Ridzwan dari kelas hubungan etnik kumpulan 18 Dr. ingin bertanya, pembangunan sekarang sudah pun ada dimana membangun dari segi ekonomi, sosial, dan pembangunan taraf hidup rakyat itu sendiri, tetapi apa kaitannya dengan spiritual development dengan pembangunan sesebuah negara? Adakah valunteerism ini sama seperti apa yang dilakukan oleh ahli politik negara dalam sukarela dalam berkhidmat bagi membangunkan negara?
